How to create a unique eye-catching background.

In product photography, the background of the products tend to be either quite simplistic, a block colour (usually white) or on the other hand write complex, for example the setting of a living room. However, in order to make this product stand out from the rest, I decided to create a subtle patterned background, however this was not always the intention.

A photograph taken by myself, Molly Macafee.

With this image, I had planned to set the product on a gradient background of a blue colour, however throughout the process of lighting the products lettering, I decided to use a long shutter speed and light paint the letter in. However upon doing this process I accidentally took this image:

With this, initially I was going to incorporate the light paining into the image as seen here, however whilst testing in photoshop, I decided to blend the light painting which created the blue effect that can be seen in the image at the top of the page. I then made a conscious decision to keep this as the background as it added a unique feel to the image and I liked the outcome of it. Therefore it is important to keep images that do not go to plan as this can become an interesting and unique image as presented here.
