How to be successful after graduation ~ Maya Sharp

Maya sharp, who graduated in 2020, is a fine art based, freelance photographer and assistant, who also receives commissions. To begin her journey, whilst working part time in Harveys restaurant and Bar, Maya researched photographer names and sent numerous emails asking if they had any opportunities for her to assist part time. Additionally, to increase her opportunities, Maya utilised websites such as AOP, which is good to find photographers and can put assistant ads live, and LinkedIn which is good to gain little assisting jobs.

Some highlights of Maya’s assistant work include:

• Travelled to Malta for three days

• Hand modelled for Greggs

• Participated in a few huge productions

• Did a shoot at a trampoline park

• Been able to learn and gain support from professional photographers and meet new people (constantly networking)

• Been able to ask for advice and help from photographers she has assisted and loaned equipment from them. She has also been given old lights by a photographer.

As a result of her experienced gained, in the last eight months Maya has become freelance.With this she has received commissions from Harvey’s bar and restaurant, wedding decoration photography etc. Most of which utilised skills she has learnt from the photographers she has assisted. Alongside her freelance and assisting she makes sure to continue with her personal work, as this allows her to keep the love of photography alive and keeps her motivated.
